Mock Mission on May 17, 2014

On Saturday, May 17, 2014, the Department of Emergency Management and the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Department coordinated a mock mission to provide an opportunity for our local volunteer groups to experience a large-scale search and rescue mission.

Among the groups working with DEM and CCSD were Cowlitz Dive Rescue, Cowlitz County Search and Rescue, Civil Air Patrol, and Cowlitz County Auxiliary Communications Service. The Kelso Masonic Lodge provided food for the teams at the end of the day.

This was a great opportunity for everyone involved. We were able to see how each of the teams function independently, and we worked together as a large team for the first time. Each team worked hard to perform their assignments, and we continue to learn how to complete the task more quickly and more efficiently with each exercise.

Search and Rescue successfully recovered three 'lost' people; Dive Rescue successfully recovered one 'victim' from a swift-flowing water scene; Civil Air Patrol and Cowlitz ACS successfully recovered one 'lost plane'.

We, as a team, appreciated the chance to participate in this mission. It was invaluable to us as a learning opportunity, and we look forward to participating in more in the future.
